Governors Message – Fall 2023

2023-09-07 by admin Leave a Comment

L-R and F-B: ARC 2023 Top 10 – 3rd: Lin Caywood and Mary Wunder (Sugarloaf), 4th Linda Evans (EPA) and Cynthia Lee (DE), 5th Bobbie Rothen and Kristy Pottol (Suggarloaf) and Gretchen Jahn (CO), 10th Kali Hague (MA at large) and Robin Laws (Ambassador)

As summer comes to a close, we are looking forward to cooler mornings and changing leaves. We can also reflect on the busy summer flying season that brought us challenges, fulfilled goals, obtained us new certificates and ratings, moved puppies to new homes, delivered patients to medical treatments, reunited friends and family members, educated the public (especially our next generation of pilots) and let us relax at a beach or mountain retreat without sitting in traffic for hours to get there – all via air…as pilots…..

I wish I could highlight and celebrate every accomplishment by a Mid-Atlantic 99 this summer, but space limitations causes me to pick out a few highlights to share with you and with the International Board.

First, I’d like to share the results of the 46th Annual Air Race Classic that was held in June. An amazing turnout by the Mid-Atlantic Section! Six of the 41 competing teams comprised of Mid-Atlantic 99s and four of those teams earned a top ten prize! Can we repeat that magic in future flying competitions? Maybe…..the ARC also offers a one day, choose your own course, prediction run in September/October called the ARC Air Derby – check it out at www.derby.airraceclasic.org and lets get the Mid-Atlantic some more recognition! The best part of this competition is that you can include male pilots on your team if you wish – it’s truly a new twist on the traditional all-female race.

Maryland Chapter member Stephanie Baynes will soon be available to provide instruction!

Next, the section gives back to its members with an annual scholarship. Maryland Chapter member Stephanie Baynes is close to completing her Certified Flight Instructor Certificate with the funds awarded to her.

Last, but not least, stay tuned for some exciting news from the DC Chapter. Not only did they just celebrate their 90th Anniversary, they are also working on something big to honor a beloved chapter member at the international level. Be sure to attend our fall section meeting to learn more about this exciting venture. Registration information is posted on our website here and social media channels.

The section continues to thrive – have you checked out our new website, engaged with us on Facebook or Instagram, or volunteered at an event to represent the section? Help us continue to grow and support our sister 99s. We are looking for a few folks to help staff a booth at the AOPA Aviators Showcase in Frederick on September 8,9. We also need a section Amelia Earhart Scholarship chair.

Blue Skies to all and hope to see you at the fall section meeting October 6-8, hosted by the Old Dominion Chapter.

Mid-Atlantic Governor
